He had one older brother, James Tasses Panages, now deceased. George's parents emigrated to the United States in 1908 from Thessolonica near the Turkish border.
George attended Sacred Heart Elementary School and also attended the Greek School after regular school classes to learn the language and the heritage of his parents. His high school years were spent at Portland High School where he was Drum Major in the school band, and earned the rank of Sargeant in the school ROTC program. During that same period of time he also worked as a Greek interpreter for the United States Customs Service, interpreting for the Captains of the Greek ships who were unloading their cargo in the Portland harbor. He graduated High School in May of 1940.
After Highschool George worked as a surveyer for the Todd Bath Iron Works Company, building EC2 Liberty Ships. He was the surveyor for the building of ten of the two thousand and ten ships built by order of President Franklin Roosevelt, to be used in carrying troops and supplies during World War II.
George enlisted in the United States Marine Corp. in February 1943, and fought for his country during World War II, serving as Marine Intelligence Courier with the Fleet Marine Force Intelligence Administration, group "N"; delivering orders from the President of the United States to the Generals on the front lines.
